This summer the boys decided that they wanted to earn some money. They hit up their grandpa for a job mowing his lawn. Pretty soon they were mowing Grandpa’s lawn, Jade’s lawn and occasionally a few others. Sometimes they had fun, sometimes it was really hard, they even cried a few times when they were especially hot or tired! But when they got paid each time we’d divide up their money between the two of them, pay their tithing and then put some in savings and the rest was to spend. But they saved most of it. Every once in awhile they’d spend some money on a book or small toy or something, but for the most part they saved it.
Last week that really paid off for them! They’ve been trying to decide just what they wanted to buy with their money. Jesse finally decided on a nintendo ds and Tyler bought a red Wii. The lady at the store made the comment “Mom, I can’t believe you’re buying this stuff before Christmas with the kids here!” I told her I wasn’t buying it, they’d worked hard all summer to save for it. I loved seeing how excited they were to have worked hard and then saved for something that they wanted. One of the things I’ve hoped I could teach my kids is to be better with their money than I have been. They decided all that hard work was definitely worth it and that they’ll take up lawn mowing again next summer!
