Pioneer Project

Jesse had to do a “pioneer project” for school.  It was due today so of course, we started last night.  Good thing we already knew what we were going to do….and good thing it worked out.  He made cheese and butter.  He made mozzarella.  You start out with a big gallon of milk and you heat and stir and add stuff in.  This part isn’t exactly fun for an 8 year old apparently.DSC_0002 copy

Then you let it sit and it starts to curdle which he thinks is gross and cool all at the same time.  Then you microwave and knead which he informs me that he doesn’t even know what that means.  Then you microwave, knead and salt….then you finally get to the fun part….The stretching!

This is the little portion we sent to school.  But really a gallon of milk doesn’t make much cheese.  It’s amazing.  The extra was only the size of that little blue bowl full.

Then he made butter, which we didn’t get any pictures of.  So for his project…homemade cheese and butter.
